Here's an excellent article by Clarence Fanto from the Berkshire Eagle, discussing the importance of libraries in municipal budgets. I liked it so much that I am going to paste the last paragraph here for you to read:
A library is the heartbeat of a community, a reflection of a town's values and aspirations. Slashing the budget sends a disturbing message about priorities and strikes a blow against civilized society. Even in hard times, a way must be found to preserve the essentials.
Remember to go to the polls on May 17th (Town House, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.) to vote for your town's budget. Your voice matters.
